Youth Speaks 2020

On Thursday 30th January 2020, nine Year 6 pupils of Class 4 set off for Bampton School for the first round of Youth Speaks. Youth Speaks is a competition to promote public speaking for young people. Teams compete in threes, with very specific roles. It involves talking about a topic and each member of the team has to speak for 1 ½ minutes and the main speaker for 4 minutes. It’s scary stuff!

Charlie, Darcey and Lyla asked the question, Is ballet just for girls? Charlie gave a fantastic speech about his experiences as a ballet dancer. Gethin, Harry and Alex spoke about their experiences in the Jaguar Challenge and asked the question, Is competition good for children? Inspired by the news, Cara, Joshua and Levinia asked the question, Should we worry about the bushfires in Australia?

All the children were fantastic ambassadors for the school and Mrs Hillier was incredibly proud of all of them. Despite some stiff competition from Bampton and Dulverton Schools, Cara, Joshua and Levinia won the competition and were awarded the John Owen Trophy. Darcey won the prize for the best Voter of Thanks.

A successful morning for Bolham. Now Levinia, Joshua and Cara must head to Barnstaple for the next phase of the competition.
